Leadership Trainings & Workshops
I help organizations adapt and thrive in the face of constant change and complexity.
In this moment of constant change, it’s increasingly clear that many of the old assumptions, models, and procedures are no longer working. Here’s just a taste of what we see unfolding all around us:
-Complexity is everywhere and must be addressed skillfully at every levels, including senior leaders, middle managers, and front-line staff
-Hierarchy no longer serves in the ways that it once did. Senior leaders can not simply work by command-and-control; entry-level employees expect more transparency, more meaning in their work, and different kinds of support. Middle managers struggle to know how to manage both downwards and upwards. Norms and expectations related to effective uses of authority are evolving rapidly.
-Learning is essential in this era of AI, and must now include so much more than the transfer of knowledge and the strengthening of competencies. Individuals must learn how to ask the right questions, hold complexity with skill and equanimity, and learn from and with each other in entirely new ways.
-Purpose is foundational. To navigate the complexity of this moment, organizations and individuals must be grounded in a clear sense of purpose.
My doctorate at Harvard was focused on understanding leadership in complex, living systems; the past twenty years of my life have been spent developing powerful, practical approaches to applying that knowledge in high-performing organization. I’ve learned that the most strategic work we must do goes beyond learning technical skills and knowledge; we must confront and transform many of our deepest assumptions regarding what leadership is and how change happens.
My consulting work guides individuals and organizations through these key mindset shifts that illuminate the new work of leadership in clear and powerful ways.
Here are my current offerings:
Take a day-long deep dive into four key mindset shifts that will change the way you understand yourself and the work of leadership.
-From TECHNICAL to ADAPTIVE
-From FRAGMENTED to WHOLE
-From PROBLEM SOLVING to QUESTION FINDING
-From NEWTONIAN to LIVING SYSTEMS
This offering brings together four of my most proven and powerful trainings into one day of transformational learning. You’ll emerge with mindsets that allow your organization to adapt and thrive in entirely new ways.
This is an eight-hour, in person session for five to 100 participants.
Connecting with the light of our personal purpose is necessary but not sufficient. To truly know ourselves and lead with courage and integrity, we must also confront our own shadow. This is the work of leading with wholeness, and it will transform the way you understand yourself and the work of leadership.
Through an engaging mix of leadership theory, myth, pop culture, reflection and dialogue, this session guides groups from 5-100 individuals through a powerful process of inner exploration and leadership development.
This session lasts 90-120 minutes, and can be delivered virtually or in-person.
Adaptive Leadership Trainings & Workshops
Adaptive Leadership is a framework for understanding the kind of leadership required to make progress on complex public problems. The model was developed by Ronald Heifetz, a Professor at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. This was the focus of my doctoral work at Harvard, and I’ve trained thousands of individuals in this work and published multiple chapters of academic research grounded in this model.
I offer introductory introductory sessions that provide an initial overview of the key elements of this model as well as advanced programming that goes deeper into the framework.
Leadership in
Living Systems
All around us, we see established practices, norms and beliefs that no longer serve our needs. The olds ways are no longer working, but we can’t see or don’t understand the new world emerging all around us. If we want to survive and thrive in this rapidly emerging new world, we need to clearly understand how living systems adapt, change, and thrive. We also need to clearly see how living systems challenge some of our deepest assumptions about what leadership is, how change happens, and how organizations function. I help organizations understand how living systems work, and what that means for leadership and management in the years ahead.
Talks and trainings related to my book
My book was published in 2017 (learn more about it here).
I offer book talks as well as trainings that explore how unjust and unequal systems of racial privilege and oppression change, and how we as individuals can play a role in that transformation.
